Today (10 August), gas pipeline company National Grid began an eight week project to replace
70 metres of cast iron gas main in Rose Hill Road.
The old cast iron main, which has come to end of its working life, will be replaced with new hard-wearing plastic pipes that will last for up to 80 years with little or no maintenance.
To carry out the work safely, initially it is necessary to install two way traffic lights in Rose Hill. As work progresses we may have to install three way lights at the junction of Rose Hill, Skitts Hill and Mill Hill, but we cannot confirm this at present. Commencing 31 August it will be necessary to close Rose Hill to through traffic for a period of approximately six weeks. .
During the road closure fully signposted diversions will be in place with traffic being diverted along Skitts Hill, Masefield Road, Notley Road and South Street.
National Grid Network Supervisor Karl Shipp said: “This is the final phase of essential work needed to ensure that the people of Braintree continue to receive a safe and reliable supply of gas.
“I would like to apologise for any inconvenience that work will cause to residents and motorists however it is a short term inconvenience for a long term benefit. The work has been agreed with the local highways agency and every effort has been made to keep disruption to a minimum.”
The project is part of National Grid’s 30 year programme to improve the safety and reliability of the gas supply network by replacing all metal gas pipes that lie within 30 metres of property
