Isle of Grain - Shorne Gas Pipeline Project

Introduction

National Grid is constructing a gas pipeline from the Isle of Grain to Shorne to ensure that natural gas can be transported from the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) importation terminal at Grain in sufficient quantity to help meet the growing demand for reliable and economic gas supplies in London and the South of England.

The proposed pipeline will be 900mm (36 inches) in diameter and will run for 21km, from National Grid's existing installations at Grain, Shorne and Gravesend.

The project

This will be a large engineering project. The pipeline must undergo a rigorous process of consultation and environmental appraisal before consent to construct can be granted by the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry.

An Environmental Statement was included with our application for consent to build the Grain to Shorne pipeline, which was submitted to the Secretary of State on 26 February 2007. Subject to receiving consent, construction of the new pipeline is expected to take place between April and October 2008.

The new pipeline will be designed and built to the same high standards of safety and security as the other 6,800km (4,160 miles) of high-pressure gas transmission pipelines already in operation across the UK.

It will be buried underground throughout its length, allowing us to reinstate the land to its original condition when work is complete.

A map of the proposed pipeline route is available on this website.
