Harefield - Southall Pipeline Project

Introduction

National Grid is building a pipeline to transport natural gas between a new Above Ground Installation (AGI) at Harefield in the London Borough of  Hillingdon to an existing AGI in Southall in the London Borough of Ealing.

The pipeline. designed and built for National Grid by Murphy Pipelines Limited, is needed to meet increased demand for gas in West London.

Project update

Construction of the 18.5km, 1220mm-diameter pipeline began in 2007 and is almost complete.

The pipeline is buried underground throughout its length.

Part of the route passes through an urban area, where around 3km of the pipeline has been constructed in tunnels to minimise its impact on the environment and the community.

The pipeline also runs beneath major roads, railway lines and rivers, where engineers used trenchless drilling techniques to reduce disturbance.

The remainder of the pipeline has been constructed using traditional open-cut trench methods.

Testing of the pipeline is due to take place at the end of November with the project being completed early in 2010.

Work will then continue to reinstate the land surrounding our works.
