National Grid begins £250,000 gas network upgrade in Barnet

05/11/2009

National Grid is investing £250,000 in an essential revamp of gas mains in Barnet.

The coming weeks will see the North London Gas Alliance, a partnership between National Grid and Skanska, replace over 1km of gas mains.

This vital project will help ensure the area continues to enjoy safe and reliable gas supplies in future years. Disruption for road users will be kept to a minimum by inserting the new mains into the existing pipes, minimising the need for digging and traffic management measures.

The work will be carried out as follows:

Phase One
Work will begin in Oakhurst Avenue on Monday 09 November and will take approximately four weeks to complete.

Phase Two
Work will begin in Church Hill Road on Monday 23 November and will take approximately four weeks to complete.

Phase Three
Work will begin in Cranbrook Road on Monday 07 December and will take approximately eight weeks to complete.  Work will also take place in Somaford Grove from 07 December and will last approximately two weeks.

This project also includes upgrades to service pipes to homes and businesses, which will involve a brief interruption to gas supplies. Engineers will contact residents in advance to arrange a time and date for this work to be carried out. People are reminded that they should always ask to see official identification before letting anyone into their property. For more information on this and to verify the identity of National Grid workers call 0845 605 6677.

To ensure local residents and businesses have all the information they require we are also sending out copies of the North London Gas Alliance’s recently launched Advance Notification Customer Pack. This pack includes a letter, a booklet explaining why the work is being done and a warning about bogus callers.

Anyone with queries about the work can also call our helpline number on 0800 096 5678.

National Grid Project Engineer Graham Chafer, said: “We have planned this project in close consultation with the local authority and other agencies to ensure any disruption is kept to a minimum.

“We apologise for any inconvenience this vital work may cause. However the new mains will ensure local residents and businesses continue to enjoy safe and reliable gas supplies in the coming decades.”

He added: “The new information packs should also help keep people in the loop about what we are doing and why we are doing it.”

More upgrades are planned for the area next year and locals will be kept informed of planned work.

This work forms part of National Grid’s nationwide mains replacement programme as agreed with the Health and Safety Executive, to replace all metallic gas mains within 30 metres of buildings.
