National Grid is investing in a 21st century upgrade for Windsor’s gas supply network.
This week engineers from National Grid, in partnership with Morrison Utility Services, begin replacing approximately 300 metres of gas mains in Windsor, from Brook Street to the Lodge at Long Walk Gate in Windsor Great Park.
This essential work involves the replacement of iron gas mains with new long lasting plastic pipes.
Construction Engineer Tim Butler said: “In Brook Street the new pipes will be inserted into the old pipes, reducing the need for large scale excavations and minimising disruption.
“We will dig trenches to install the majority of the remaining new mains. However we will not be digging up any part of The Long Walk, where we will be using an underground drill to install this part of the pipe.”
The project includes upgrades to service pipes to homes and businesses. Engineers will need to gain access to properties to carry out this work and will contact residents in advance to arrange a time and date. People are reminded that they should always ask to see official identification before letting anyone into their property.
The project has been planned in close coordination with local stakeholders including the Royal Borough and The Crown Estate to ensure the project is delivered with a minimum of disruption.
.
Work should be complete by June 12 2009, although a separate project to replace gas mains beneath the Great Park will also take place this year.
Tim Butler added: “We apologise for any inconvenience our work causes. However this essential project will ensure a safe, secure and reliable gas supply in the decades ahead. Once installed the new plastic pipes will last for a minimum of 80 years if they are left undisturbed.”
The work forms part of a 30 year national mains replacement programme developed in conjunction with the Health and Safety Executive.
