National Grid begins new phase of essential £1.5million upgrade to gas network in Shepherd’s Bush

05/11/2009

National Grid’s ongoing project to replace 6.5km of gas mains in the Shepherd’s Bush area will enter a new phase this week.

From Wednesday 04 November, Uxbridge Road will be closed at the junction of Shepherd’s Bush Green and Wood Lane for two weeks to allow for vital mains replacement work to take place. Diversions will be in place via Wood Lane, South Africa Road and Bloemfontein Road.

Work also began this week on the westbound carriageway of Goldhawk Road from the junction with Shepherds Bush Green towards the Seven Sisters Roundabout.

This work will take about eight weeks but work will be suspended between Friday 11 December and Monday 04 January to avoid disruption over the Christmas season.

In January, gas mains replacement work will also begin on the eastbound inside lane of Uxbridge Road from the junction of Shepherds Bush Green and Wood Lane.

To minimise disruption all new mains are being inserted into the old mains wherever possible to reduce the need for digging.

National Grid has also liaised closely with the council to minimise any disruption to Remembrance Day commemorations in the area on Sunday 08 November.

National Grid Constructions Operations Engineer Pat Nathan said: “The existing mains have served the area for many years but now require replacement.

“We are doing our utmost to minimise any disruption and apologise for any inconvenience our essential work may cause.  Once installed these new plastic mains will help to ensure the area continues to enjoy safe, reliable and secure gas supplies over the coming years.”

The work is being carried out by North London Gas Alliance, a partnership between National Grid and Skanska, and should be completed by April 2010.

This work forms part of National Grid’s national mains replacement programme, agreed in conjunction with the Health and Safety Executive, to replace all metallic gas mains within 30 metres of buildings.
