Heartsease gas project enters second phase

31/07/2009

August marks the start of the next phase of a £1.5 million project to upgrade gas supplies for residents and businesses in Norwich’s Heartease Estate.

National Grid, in partnership with Morrison Utility Services, started work in April on a 12-month programme to renew 14 kilometres of gas mains. The existing iron mains are being replaced with new, long-lasting plastic pipes that have a lifespan of 80 years if left undisturbed in the ground.

The first phase of the project is almost complete and work is starting on the second and final phase. In a rolling programme from the beginning of August until the end of March next year engineers will be replacing mains in the following roads:

Munnings Road, Woodforde Road, Springfield Road, Antingham Road, Riley Close, Rider Haggard Road, Watling Road, Churchman Road, Purland Road, Barnes Close, Finch Close, Williamson Close, Clancy Road, Hanly Close, Goulburn Road, Gunn Road, Colls Road, Graham Square, Redfern Road, Deloney Road, Marryat Road, Manby Road, Porson Road, Woodside Road, Redfern Close, Fugill Road, Fugill Green, Frere Road and Warnett Road.

Work is initially taking place in Rider Haggard Road, Munnings Road, Deloney Road, Woodforde Road, Springfield Road, Colls Road, Graham Square and Redfern Road. For safety reasons temporary traffic restrictions, including lane closures and temporary traffic lights, may be necessary for phased periods.

National Grid Network Engineer (Investment) Julian Yaxley said: “This project will ensure local people will continue to benefit from safe and reliable gas supplies for decades to come. The project is making good progress and we would like to thank the residents of the Heartsease Estate for their patience and goodwill throughout the works.

“Safety is our top priority and we are liaising with the highways authority over the necessary traffic management measures. To reduce inconvenience, work near to local schools will be carried out during the school holidays. We would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused by our works and assure people that every effort will be made to minimise any disruption.”

The project forms part of a 30-year mains replacement programme developed by National Grid in conjunction with the Health and Safety Executive and the industry regulator Ofgem.

If any member of the public has any queries about the work they should contact Morrison Utility Services on 01462 444940.
