A £500,000 upgrade by National Grid will revitalise the gas pipeline network in Hornsey to ensure safe, secure and reliable supplies for the future.
From 05 May 2009, the North London Gas Alliance, a partnership between National Grid and Skanska, will begin replacing approximately 1.4km of gas mains with new hard wearing plastic pipes.
The work will take place over the next six months in Tottenham Lane between the junctions with High Street and Elmfield Avenue. The majority of new pipes will be inserted into the old ones to minimise the need for excavations and to reduce traffic disruption. To further minimise the effect on traffic we will also be laying small diameter pipes beneath pavements.
Some side road closures and diversions may be needed, and advanced warning signs will be in place to help motorists and pedestrians and to reduce traffic disruption. All closures will be agreed with the local highways authority.
Some of the work will involve us having to briefly disconnect people’s gas supplies. Residents whose gas supplies will be affected will be notified in advance. We would also remind residents to ask to see official identification before letting anyone into their property.
Construction Operations Engineer Michael Morris, said: “The existing mains have provided many years of service but it is now time to replace them. We have done our utmost to minimise any disruption and apologise for any inconvenience the work causes. The new pipes should last for a minimum of 80 years if they are left undisturbed.”
This essential work forms part of National Grid’s national mains replacement programme, as agreed with the Health and Safety Executive, which involves the replacement of all irons mains within 30 metres of buildings.
