Improvements in the pipeline for Worcester

26/06/2009

Gas pipeline company National Grid is due to start work on a £127,000 project to improve the gas supply in Worcester.

On Monday 29 June work begins to replace an old metal main in New Street with a new plastic pipe.  The work is due to be completed by mid-September.

During that time it will be necessary to close New Street to traffic to enable engineers to work safely.  Diversions will be signposted.

National Grid project manager Paul Jones said:  ‘We are replacing two old cast iron mains that have come to the end of their working lives.  They will be replaced with new hard-wearing plastic pipes that will last for up to 80 years with little or no maintenance.

‘I appreciate that work of this kind can cause disruption to residents and motorists however it is a short term inconvenience for a long term benefit.  This is essential work needed to ensure that this part of the city continues to receive a safe and reliable supply of gas.’

The project is part of National Grid’s 30-year programme to improve the safety and reliability of the gas supply network by replacing all metal gas pipes that lie within 30 metres of property
