Engineers from Morrison Utility Services working in partnership with National Grid completed Twickenham’s gas mains replacement on the 20th August - eleven days ahead of schedule.
Work to replace 200 metres of old cast iron mains with new hard wearing plastic pipes in King Street and London Road began on the 22nd July and was originally scheduled to take six weeks to complete.
National Grid project engineer Robert Benn said: “We were very aware of the disruption our works would cause to the local community and we wanted to complete the work as soon as we possibly could. By using a technique known as insertion (inserting the new pipe through the old one) and working up to 7pm in the evening and at weekends our engineers were able to complete the job well ahead of schedule.”
The work to help ensure safe and reliable gas supplies to Twickenham for decades to come, is part of National Grid’s ongoing mains replacement project which has been agreed in conjunction with the Health and Safety Executive and involves the replacement of all iron gas mains within 30 metres of buildings.
Robert added: “We’d like to thank residents, businesses and drivers and local councillors for their patience and co-operation during this work. We would also like to thank Richmond Borough Council for allowing us to bring our road closure plans forward. It was a great co-ordinated effort from everyone involved.”
