Gas Mains Upgrade in Eynesbury

25/09/2007

Gas pipeline company National Grid is advising residents and motorists of temporary traffic lights in Eynesbury, near St Neots, during October, while essential work is underway to upgrade gas mains in the town.

Temporary traffic lights will be installed at the junction of St Mary’s Street, Berkley Street and Montagu Street from Monday 1st October for four weeks to enable engineers to work safely on gas mains which cross the junction.  The existing iron mains will be replaced with brand new plastic pipes, which have a lifespan of at least 80 years if left undisturbed in the ground.

National Grid Sector Manager Martin Smith said: “We apologise for any inconvenience caused to motorists and residents. These are essential works which will enable local people to continue to enjoy safe and reliable gas supplies for many years to come.

“Safety is our top priority and the temporary signals will be in place to protect both engineers and road-users. However, we will endeavour to minimise any disruption and complete the work as quickly and safely as possible.”

The scheme forms part of a multi-million package of improvements to the gas network in East Anglia. It is a key element in a national mains renewal programme developed by National Grid in conjunction with the Health & Safety Executive.
