Gas pipeline company National Grid has postponed its plans to lay a new gas main in Droitwich.
Work to replace an old metal main running along St Andrews Street was due to start on August 28, but following a request from Wychavon District Council the job has been shelved until next year.
The council asked National Grid to reconsider the job as the work would clash with the town’s annual Salt Day Festival on September 15.
National Grid project engineer Paul Jones said: ‘We are happy to postpone this job until the New Year. People in Droitwich have already suffered disruption from the floods, the last thing they want us to do is to spoil their festival.
‘The work still needs to be done because the main in St Andrew’s street has come to the end of its operational life. We will be replacing it with a new plastic pipe that will last for many years and help to ensure a safe and reliable supply of gas in this part of the town.’
The project is part of National Grid’s 30 year programme to improve the safety and reliability of the gas supply network by replacing all metal gas pipes that lie within 30 metres of property.
