National Grid is investing in a 21st century makeover for gas mains in part of the historic town of Windsor.
National Grid in partnership with Morrison Utility Services has begun replacing 533m of gas mains in St Leonard’s Road and Victoria Street, Windsor. The work involves the replacement of iron gas mains with new hard wearing long lasting pipes. The work will ensure the area continues to enjoy safe and reliable gas supplies in the future.
To allow for the safe completion of the works a 45-metre stretch of St Leonard’s Road will be closed from the junction of Victoria Street southwards to Russell Street from 7am on Monday 22 June to 6pm on Friday July 3.
Signs will divert motorists around a southbound diversion via Victoria Street, Alexandra Road and Russell Street. Parking bays will be suspended outside the Hong Kong restaurant in Russell Street for the duration of the works. Bays in Alexandra Road alongside the car park will be suspended at weekends.
To minimise disruption we will be inserting the majority of the new pipe into the old mains, which means we will have to dig fewer large holes.
This project also includes upgrades to service pipes to homes and businesses. Engineers will need to gain access to properties to arrange this and we will contact residents in advance to arrange a time and date. People are reminded that they should always ask to see official identification before letting anyone into their property. For more information and advice about this please call

This work has been carefully planned in consultation with the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead to ensure the project is delivered with a minimum of disruption.
The essential project forms part of National Grid’s mains replacement programme which involves replacing all iron gas mains within 30 metres of buildings.
National Grid Project Engineer Kevin Wood, said: “Once installed the new plastic pipes should last for many years and this essential work will ensure local people enjoy safe and secure gas supplies in the years ahead.
“We apologise for any inconvenience and people can rest assured that we will do all we can to minimise disruption.”
