Gas Works in Coventry

23/07/2007

Gas pipeline company National Grid is advising motorists of a change in the traffic management at the gas main replacement work in Earlsdon.

On Wednesday 25 July 2007, Earlsdon Avenue North will reopen to traffic.

In addition, four-way temporary traffic lights will be put up at the junction of Earlsdon Street, Albany Road, Earlsdon Avenue North and Earlsdon Avenue South.  They are expected to be in operation for three weeks.

Poplar Road will be closed to traffic from the island for three weeks.  Access to Poplar Road will be available from Newcome Road.

National Grid project manager Stan Best said:  “This work is part of a major mains replacement scheme which will improve the gas network in Coventry and help to ensure a safe and reliable supply of gas.  I realise the traffic restrictions will cause some inconvenience to motorists but I would ask them to bear with us while we carry out this essential work.

“The work we are doing will have a long term benefit.  The new pipe is made of hard wearing plastic and, once in the ground, will last for many years and will need little or no maintenance.”

The work is being carried out on behalf of National Grid by West Midlands Gas Alliance.  The Alliance is a partnership of two companies, National Grid and Morgan Est plc, a major utilities contractor.  The project is part of National Grid’s 30 year programme to improve the safety and reliability of the gas supply network by replacing all metal gas pipes that lie within 30 metres of property.
