National Grid rolls out last phase of major upgrade work in Golders Green

22/07/2009

The final phase of an essential National Grid project to improve the local gas network begins on Monday 27 July.

Approximately 60 metres of iron gas mains are being replaced with new hard wearing plastic mains. This work forms the final part of a project which began last year to replace 6km of iron gas mains in the area.

Phase 1
Work will take place in Highfield Avenue at the junction of Golders Green Road for about two weeks. To facilitate this work the left hand lane leading up to Golders Green Road will be closed for the duration of the project.

Phase 2
Work shifts to Alba Gardens and Golders Green Road. It will involve open excavations being dug across Golders Green Road. This will be conducted in three stages during off-peak periods and should take around a week to complete.

Phase 3
This work will involve connecting and commissioning the new pipes. It is expected to take approximately one week to complete and will involve the closure of Highfield Avenue for two days.

Traffic management measures including temporary traffic lights, which will operate during off peak hours only, and diversions will be used in the course of the project. Lights will be removed and open trenches covered up outside working hours.

National Grid Construction Operations Engineer, Michael Morris said: “Though this work may cause disruption it is short term inconvenience for a long term benefit. If left undisturbed the new plastic pipe should last for many years and ensure people enjoy safe and reliable gas supplies in future years.

“This project has been planned in close consultation with the London Borough of Barnet and other agencies. Carrying out this work in the summer holidays when the roads are generally quieter should minimise disruption for residents and motorists.”

The work will be carried out by the North London Gas Alliance, a partnership between National Grid and Skanska. Work on the project should be complete by the end of the school holidays. If you have any questions about the work call our helpline number on 0800 096 5678.

The project forms part of National Grid’s 30-year-programme to improve the safety and reliability of the gas safety network by replacing all metal gas pipes that lie within 30 metres of property.
