National Grid is investing £500,000 in essential improvements to the gas pipeline network in the Hertford Road area of Enfield.
Engineers from the North London Gas Alliance, a partnership between National Grid and Skanska, will be replacing approximately 3km of iron gas mains in Hertford Road, Enfield, with new plastic pipes.
Work is set to begin in early May and will take place in Hertford Road between the junctions with Ordnance Road and Green Street, following on from work carried out last year.
The work will take around six months and will involve small diameter mains being laid beneath footpaths to avoid road disruption.
However, a number of side road closures and diversions will be needed, including the closure of Turkey Street during the school summer holidays.
Further work to replace gas mains beneath footpaths between the junction with Green Street and Nags Head Road is due to begin in August or September and will take around five months to complete.
More gas mains replacement is likely to take place in Hertford Road from April next year, between the junctions of Tyberry Road and Nags Head Road.
This essential work will improve local gas supplies and forms part of National Grid’s nationwide mains replacement project, as agreed with the Health and Safety Executive. This involves the replacement of all metallic mains within 30 metres of buildings.
To minimise disruption to residents, businesses and road users this project has been planned in close consultation with local stakeholders, including Enfield Council.
National Grid Construction Operations Engineer Michael Morris said: “We would like to reassure people that we do all we can to minimise disruption.
“We apologise for any inconvenience but would remind people that this work is essential. The durable plastic pipes we are installing should last for a minimum of 80 years if left undisturbed. They will provide safe, secure and reliable gas supplies in the coming years.”
