National Grid upgrades Twickenham gas network

20/07/2009

As school goes out for the summer National Grid is getting busy with essential improvement work in Twickenham.

Taking advantage of the traditional lull in traffic during the school summer holidays, National Grid will replace over 200 metres of iron gas mains in King Street and London Road, Twickenham.

This essential work will see the mains replaced with new hard wearing plastic pipes which will last for many years if left undisturbed.

Work gets underway on Monday 20 July and will take approximately six weeks to complete.

Bus stops in King Street, outside the Post Office and the George Inn, will be temporarily moved to Heath Road for the first two weeks of the project. Parking in part of Heath Road has been suspended to facilitate this. Part of the northbound carriageway of London Road will be closed at the junction of King Street from August 17 for up to two weeks. A diversion will be in place via Arragon Road.

Work on this important project will be carried out by Morrison Utility Services in partnership with National Grid.

This project also includes upgrades to service pipes to homes and businesses. Engineers will contact residents in advance to arrange a time and date for this work to be carried out. People are reminded that they should always ask to see official identification before letting anyone into their property. For more information and advice please call 0845 605 6677.

National Grid project engineer Robert Benn said: “By scheduling this work for the summer holiday period when the roads are generally quieter we should be able to minimise disruption for road users and residents.

“This work has been planned in close consultation with the local authority and other agencies. We apologise for any inconvenience caused. Once installed these new mains should provide many years of reliable service.”

If you require more information on the work please contact 01753 872520 during office hours and 01277 814800 outside office hours.

The project forms part of National Grid’s ongoing mains replacement project. This has been agreed in conjunction with the Health and Safety Executive and involves the replacement of all iron gas mains within 30 metres of buildings.
