National Grid’s ongoing essential work to ensure residents and businesses in the area enjoy safe and secure gas supplies in the future is about to enter a key phase.
The scheme involves the replacement of approximately 12km of iron gas mains with new hard wearing pipes which will last for many years. This work is being carried out by the North London Gas Alliance, a partnership between National Grid and Skanska and is due to be completed in April 2010.
We are due to start replacing a section of the mains in Romford Road and Ilford Hill on June 29. Completion of this 150 metre section is vital to the project.
Wherever possible we will insert the new pipes into the old pipes, which will minimise inconvenience for road users. However for technical reasons this is not always possible and in these instances we will need to dig some open cut trenches. Some lane closures will also be required and these will be fully signposted these to assist road users.
All work has been carefully planned in close consultation with the London Boroughs of Redbridge and Newham and Transport for London to ensure it is carried out with a minimum of disruption.
National Grid Construction Engineer Steve Blackburn, said: “The old gas mains have provided many years of service. However the time has now come to replace them so that people to continue to enjoy safe and reliable supplies in the future.
“We apologise for any inconvenience our work may cause and people can rest assured that we will do all we can to minimise inconvenience.”
We hope to complete our work in Romford Road and the A406 Slip Road by late July 2009. If you require more information about the project please call 0800 0965678.
This work forms part of National Grid’s nationwide mains replacement programme. Agreed in consultation with the Health and Safety Executive this involves replacing all iron gas mains within 30 metres of buildings.
