Temporary Traffic Lights In Ely

16/08/2007

Motorists in Ely are being advised that there will be temporary traffic lights at the junction of St Mary’s Street and Downham Road for two weeks, starting today (Thursday 16th August).

The temporary restrictions will be in place to enable gas pipeline company National Grid to carry out safely essential gas mains replacement works across the junction. St Mary’s Street will be reduced to a single lane in this section and entry to the junction from St Mary’s Street and Downham Road will be traffic light controlled.

The works are part of a scheme to renew 197 metres of cast iron gas mains in St Mary’s Street. The iron mains will be replaced with brand new plastic pipes, which have a lifespan of at least 80 years if left undisturbed in the ground.

The work is being undertaken by Morrison Utility Services on behalf of National Grid and will enable local residents and businesses to continue to enjoy a safe and reliable gas supply for decades to come.

National Grid Construction Engineer David Jewson said: “We apologise for any inconvenience caused to motorists and residents. The traffic management measures are necessary to protect engineers and road-users while we do this essential work, however, we are aiming to complete the project as soon as we can.”

The work is part of a national mains renewal programme developed by National Grid in conjunction with the Health & Safety Executive.

For any queries about this project please call Morrison Utility Services on 01462 444940.
