From 21 January, for approximately 16 weeks, National Grid will begin essential gas engineering work to replace the existing gas pipes in the central Richmond area in order to improve local gas supplies.
The project will be carried out by contractor Morrison Utility Services, who have been carrying out preparation works in the area since 10 January.
The scheme will be completed in the following phases:
- Phase one and two – The Quadrant and George Street from the junction of Kings Street
- Phase three, four and five – The Quadrant, Eton Street and Paradise Parade
- Phase six – Park Shot and Paradise Road.
All work has been brought forward and coordinated with Richmond Council to take into account their refurbishment scheme in the spring.
Project manager, Nigel Daborn said, “The work is vital if locals still want to take for granted a safe and reliable gas supply.
“I appreciate there may be increased disruption but our aim is to do all the work we possibly can now so we shouldn’t need to return to the area in the future. Please be assured we will continue to work closely with the council to minimise inconvenience.”
He continued, “I would like to thank the community for its patience and cooperation. If you have any queries please call 01753 872 520 between 8am and 5pm or 0845 605 6677 if you are calling outside normal working hours.”
The work forms part of National Grid’s national mains replacement programme as agreed with the Health and Safety Executive. This involves replacing all metal gas mains within 30 metres of buildings with new plastic pipe in order to maintain a safe and secure gas supply network. The new plastic pipe has a life span of over 80 years.
