West Street Works Start This Week

14/08/2007

Motorists travelling in Dunstable are being reminded that temporary traffic restrictions will be in force in West Street from this Thursday (16 August) while gas mains replacement work is underway.

This week engineers will start a five-week project to renew 250 metres of cast iron mains in West Street. While the work is underway West Street will be open to westbound traffic only between the junctions with High Street North and Chiltern Road. Clearly signed diversions will be in place for eastbound traffic.

The measures are in place to safeguard engineers, motorists and other road-users. National Grid has worked closely with the local authority highways department and the Highways Agency to plan the work and the necessary traffic management measures.

National Grid Construction Engineer Dilbir Chana said: “We apologise for any inconvenience the mains replacement will cause to residents, businesses and motorists, however, we would appeal to people to bear with us while we complete these essential works.”

The work is being carried out by Morrison Utility Services on behalf of National Grid and is part of a £500,000 project to replace 2.5kms of cast iron mains in the town.

The mains renewal work is part of a multi-million pound package of improvements to the gas supply system in the East of England and is an element of a national mains replacement programme developed in conjunction with the Health & Safety Executive.

If anyone has any questions about this project, they should call Morrison Utility Services on 01462 444940.
