Transporting Britain's Energy

Development of Energy Scenarios Document

As part of National Grid's annual Transporting Britain’s Energy (TBE) consultation process, the principal purpose of the Development of Energy Scenarios document is to set out our latest projections for gas supply and demand over the next ten years.

Historically we have also presented analysis for the development of the National Transmission System (NTS) that arises from the supply-demand outlook. Whilst this remains important and is outlined in this document, the changing forecasts of lower demands with little or no growth and completed or near completed import infrastructure means that the emphasis on new NTS investments has shifted to include alternative topics such as 2020 targets and security of supply. To reflect this we have changed the name of this publication from ‘Development of NTS Investment Scenarios’ to ‘Development of Energy Scenarios’.

The Development of Energy Scenarios document was released at our annual TBE seminar on 9th July 2009.

TBE 2009 Industry Seminar: "Demanding Times"

National Grid held its 9th annual industry seminar “TBE 2009: Demanding Times” on Thursday 9th July 2009, as part of its Transporting Britain’s Energy consultation process.

The event highlighted the effects of the global recession on both demand and supply, and explored how much of this demand will return as energy prices fall and energy efficiency measures have a greater impact going forward.

National Grid presented its latest demand and supply forecasts for the next ten years, as well as discussing some of the key considerations for electricity and gas for the first half of the twenty first century. National Grid also released its Development of Energy Scenarios document that provides further detail on its latest projections for supply and demand.

The event was chaired by Alison Kay, National Grid’s Commercial Director, Transmission. As well as covering National Grid’s latest forecasts, the event covered a wide range of topics including:

  • European developments in demand and market structures
  • Security of supply and implications of intermittency on electricity markets
  • Renewable energy, including biogas and energy efficiency measures
  • UK Renewable Energy Strategy & 2020 targets
  • Transporting Britain's Energy - Ofgem's perspective.

Energy Market Uncertainties: Summary of Responses

As part of the Transporting Britain’s Energy consultation process National Grid issues a number of targeted questionnaires. These are designed to gather data related to our current forecasts of gas supply and demand on our network and assist us with the process of evaluating network capacity requirements.

The Market Uncertainties section of the targeted questionnaire, received by all parties, is intended to collect industry views on specific uncertainties that could influence the development of the UK gas market.

It is used to validate the planning assumptions that underpin our supply and demand forecasts.

This document provides an overview of the responses to this year’s Market Uncertainties questionnaire.
