Gas Services guide

New gas service (New Supply)

Select this option if your property does not currently have gas and you require it.

You do have to pay for this service. An indication of charges for a domestic property standard new service.

Work at non-domestic properties or where the work is non-standard because of distances require a bespoke quotation and the payment of a 'Quotation Charge' to provide this quotation.

In most circumstances and if requested and paid for, National Grid will:

  • Bring a service pipe from the public road or footpath to your required meter position.
  • Provide and install the meter box or housing if the meter is to be on an outside wall.
  • Provide and then reinstate any excavations in order for us to lay our service pipe. (You can opt to arrange this yourself for a reduced cost).

Please be aware National Grid will not provide you a gas meter. We will also not install or connect to any boilers, appliances etc.

  • You must order a gas meter from your chosen Gas Supplier (who you intend to pay your gas bill to).
  • You should arrange installation and connection of internal appliances, boilers etc with a Gas Safe Registered engineer.

You will only be able to order a gas meter when National Grid provide you with a work commencement date and your MPRN (meter reference number) which will not be until after you have accepted and paid for the work.

Important Your gas service will only become active when your meter has been installed so be aware of this in your planning if you are intending to remove your present heating and/or cooking provision.

Service alteration (Move Meter) - to move, upgrade or downgrade my existing gas service pipe and/or move my gas meter

Select this option if you wish to move your meter into a new location, alter the route of the pipe feeding the meter from the road or increase the pipe size feeding the meter because of an increase gas use.

You do have to pay for this service. An indication of charges for a domestic property service alteration.

Work at non-domestic properties or where the work is non-standard because of distances require a bespoke quotation and the payment of a 'Quotation Charge' to provide this quotation.

In most circumstances and if requested and paid for, National Grid will:

  • Move the service pipe into the new new location.
  • Relocate the meter and re-attach it to the service pipe and reconnect your appliances back to the meter. (You can opt to arrange this yourself for a reduced cost).
  • Provide and install the meter box or housing if the meter is to be on an outside wall.
  • Provide all excavations and then reinstate any excavations when the work is completed. (You can opt to arrange this yourself for a reduced cost).

Important Please be aware National Grid will not provide you a new or replacement gas meter. In these circumstances opt to arrange relocation of the meter and reconnection of your appliances back to the meter. You must arrange the new meter with your Gas Supplier or Meter Asset Manager and reconnection of your appliances back to the meter with a Gas Safe Registered Engineer. You will be without gas until this part of the work is completed.

Disconnection - I want to permanently disconnect from gas

Select this option if you wish National Grid to permanently disconnect (cut off) the service pipe feeding the meter from the road or disconnect a gas main that is feeding a street.

You do have to pay for this service. An indication of charges for a service disconnection.

You must arrange for any gas meters to be removed by the Gas Supplier before we do this work.

In most circumstances National Grid will disconnect the pipe but will not remove the pipe(s). You will receive confirmation that the pipe(s) has been disconnected and you can then remove it if you require.

Meter Box Spares

Select this option if you require spare parts e.g. replacement doors, hinges etc for your meter box or if you require repairs to your meter box.

You can only apply for this work for domestic U6 (most domestic properties) meter box.

You do have to pay for this service. An indication of charges for Domestic meter box spares and repairs.
