Do you have a live gas service?

If you have no gas pipework and want gas

If there is no evidence of gas pipework either terminating in a meter box outside your property or inside the property, you will need to order and pay for a new gas service.

If you have gas pipework but no meter

If you have gas pipework at your property terminating inside the building or outside into a meter box with no meter on it, you should call 0845 835 1111 for a free live or dead check. A check  will be made whether this service pipe is live (with gas in it) or dead (the pipe has been disconnected and there is no gas in it). This may require an engineer to visit your property to visually check which is still free.

If you do have a live gas service you can be provided with your MPRN (Meter Point Reference Number). You will then need to order a gas meter from your chosen Gas Supplier or Meter Asset Manager using the provided MPRN and order the connection of your appliances to the meter by a Gas Safe Registered Engineer.

If the pipes are determined to be dead, you will need to order and pay for a new gas service if you want gas.

If you discover yellow gas pipework

If, during the process of your work, you discover a yellow gas pipe already at your property, this may mean you have a live gas service. You will need to check if this service pipe is live (with gas in it) or dead (the pipe has been disconnected and there is no gas in it). Please contact us as soon as possible if you have damaged or exposed a gas pipe as a safety check may be necessary.

If you haven't already done so, call 0845 835 1111 and ask for a 'live or dead check'. An engineer may be required to visit your property to check if the pipe has gas in it or not. This service is free.

  • If you are informed the pipe is 'live' (meaning there is gas in it), if you wish to have a gas service at your property, follow the instructions at the top of this screen.
  • If you are informed the pipe is 'dead' (meaning there is no gas in it), and you wish to have gas, please continue to order a new gas service.
  • If the pipe is live and you wish to move the gas pipe or any meter attached to it, continue to order a service alteration.
  • If the pipe is live and you wish to/must permanently disconnect your property from gas, continue to order a service disconnection. You will be required to order and pay for a service disconnection when demolishing a property as you are legally not allowed to continue with any demolition work until we have disconnected this service.
