Stoke Bardolph Substation construction – project information

Background

In recent years there has been an increase in the demand for electricity in Nottinghamshire and the surrounding region.

Central Networks (East), the local electricity distribution company, needs a new connection to National Grid’shigh-voltage network to maintain the quality and security of local electricity supplies to Gedling, the City of Nottingham and South Nottinghamshire and meet growing demands for power in the future.

Before this new connection can be made, Central Networks requires National Grid to build a new high-voltage 400,000 volts (400kV) substation.

National Grid identified three possible locations for the new substation. After taking into account technical and environmental considerations, the number of possible sites was narrowed to two locations:

  • Between Stoke Lane and VictoriaBusinessPark
  • Approximately 700 metres south west of Stoke Bardolph village

National Grid submitted planning applications for both sites, and Gedling Borough Council granted consent in March 2009 for the substation to be builtapproximately 700 metres south west of Stoke Bardolph village.
