The introduction of the British Electricity Transmission and Trading Arrangements (BETTA) saw National Grid appointed Great Britain System Operator (GBSO) and a Transmission Owner (TO) in England and Wales.

In Scotland there are 2 TOs, Scottish Power Transmission Limited and Scottish Hydro Electric Transmission Limited.
