Service Description

The Maximum Generation Service (MGS) allows access to capacity which is outside of the Generator’s normal operating range in emergency circumstances. MGS will be initiated in specific circumstances by the issuing of an Emergency Instruction in accordance with the Grid Code BC2.9.2.

The service is provided on a non-firm basis with providers being paid for any energy that they deliver. The arrangements for MGS are contained whining the CUSC.

Why is it needed?

The need to request the Maximum Generation Service would normally be, in order to maintain system security in the event insufficient relevant Balancing Mechanism Offers are available and, or in the event of breakdowns and other operating problems (such as, in respect of frequency system voltage levels or system overloads) on any part of the transmission system.

Major Technical Requirements

There are no specific technical requirements as the service is provided on an endeavour basis.

On receipt of a MGS instruction, generators would provide Maximum Generation from the available BMU continuously until the earlier of the expiry of a period of 120 minutes and the time of receipt of an instruction to cease provision.

Procurement Process

MGS is procured through a long term Commercial Service Agreement which contains BMU specific information and prices. Terms are set out in CUSC section 4.2.

Payment

Payment Structure:
Utilisation Payment (£/MWh) is agreed on a bilateral basis and detailed in the Commercial Services Agreement. It is only paid when the service is utilised and energy is delivered.

BSAD: Contracts for Maximum Generation are utilisation based only. National Grid will estimate volume and associated cost of the service and will include this estimate in a resubmission of BSAD Once the BMU Metered Volumes are available, National Grid will provide final volumes and costs associated with Maximum Generation Services as soon as practicable

ABSVD: ABSVD is optional for MGS providers. Utilisation volumes will be calculated in accordance with the CUSC. The relevant Commercial Services Agreement and the methodology are contained in Part C of the ABSVD Statement.
