Service Description
Enhanced Reactive Power Service is the provision of:
- Voltage support which exceeds the minimum technical requirement of Obligatory Reactive Power Service (including Synchronous Compensation); or
- Reactive Power Capability from any other Plant or Apparatus which can generate or absorb Reactive Power (including Static Compensation equipment) that isn’t required to provide the Obligatory Reactive Power Service.
Why is it needed?
Enhanced Reactive Power Service provides a route to market for:
- Reactive Power over and above the Obligatory Reactive Power Service or;
- Plant or Apparatus which can generate or absorb Reactive Power that isn’t required to provide the Obligatory Reactive Power Service.
Major Technical Requirements
Where provided by a generator as a condition of their connection to the GB Transmission System then the Reactive capability must exceed the minimum technical requirement of Obligatory Reactive Power Service which is set out in the Grid Code.
Procurement Process
The Enhanced Reactive Power Service is procured via tenders.
Generators can participate in a tender held every six months. If the Generator is successful following tender assessment in accordance with the evaluation criteria specified in the CUSC, then a market agreement is entered into. If a tender is not successful and Generator is required to provide Obligatory Reactive Power Service then they will continue on Default Arrangements for the Obligatory requirements. For the avoidance of doubt if a tender is not successful and Generator is not required to provide Obligatory Reactive Power Service then no payments will be made
Payment
Payment Structure:
The tender allows the Generator to request:
- An Available Capability Price (£/MVar/hr) and/or a Synchronised Capability Price (£/MVar/hr) and/or a Utilisation Price (£/MVarh)
- The choice of term from a minimum period of 12 months and thereafter in 6-month increments (12, 18, 24, 30, 36 months, etc.).
