National Grid Volunteer: Sue Hughes-Payne

Sue Hughes-Payne

Sue is a Communications Adviser within Corporate Affairs.

"I volunteer with Special Olympics Great Britain West Midlands region Alpine ski team. My role involves providing the team with PR support including writing, producing and distributing a quarterly newsletter, providing hands on support at events and taking photographs at competitions.

"I became a volunteer when National Grid became the first ever official partner of Special Olympics Great Britain in 2007. I got involved because I've been keen to do some charitable work within my local community for the past couple of years, but hadn't found the right opportunity for me. As one of the clubs in my local region were looking for the sort of skills that I use everyday in my job, I thought it would be the perfect opportunity for me to get involved and show my support.

"Volunteering with SOGB - and I'm sure all the other National Grid employees would say the same - has provided me with a number of fantastic experiences, both on a personal and professional level. I feel like a member of the team and love the atmosphere and vibe. Not only that, it's pushed me to live outside my comfort zone which has helped enormously with my personal development.

"I’m so impressed by the athletes’ endless enthusiasm, spirit and camaraderie. Nothing is impossible and they're passionate about what they do. Sometimes it's too easy to be negative in life, but their attitude has rubbed off on me and given me a far more positive outlook on things. I would actively encourage anyone who doesn't currently volunteer to do so - it's a truly life changing experience."
