Go Naturally Wild This Bank Holiday

Penwortham Environmental Education Centre is inviting youngsters to have ‘Naturally Wild’ time during the school half term holidays.

The centre, based in the grounds of National Grid’s high-voltage electricity substation in Howick Cross Lane, off the A49 at Penwortham, near Preston, will be holding three special activity days during the Whitsun break.

Events start on Bank Holiday Monday 29th May with a family Monster Creepy Crawly Day, which is an excellent, lively and exciting way for the whole family to discover the amazing world of minibeasts.  Roger Swailles will be on hand with his fantastic ‘Bug Box’ full of live exotic invertebrates and for those who feel inspired by what they see; there is the opportunity to make a sculpture to take home.

Tuesday and Wednesday 30th and 31st May are Eco-Activity Days for children from 8 to 11 years old.

Tuesday’s activities will be based on the TV series Lost, giving children the chance to test their survival capability and learn new skills in tracking, camouflage and food finding when out in the wild.

Wednesday will see the children go really wild and get up to lots of ‘Animal Antics’ creating animal superheroes and making bird feeders and nesting boxes.

Helen Greaves, temporary centre manager said:  ‘These activity days are great fun and incredibly popular.  It gives children the chance to make new friends, learn about the world around them, local environmental issues and how they can help.

Penwortham is part of National Grid's network of environmental education centres based on electricity substation sites around the UK.  Our centres are run in partnership with local education authorities, environmental charities and other organisations, and provide outdoor learning opportunities for schools and a range of activities and training for adults, community groups and companies.
