ENERGISE THE NATION

National Grid is the largest utility in the UK and the second largest utility by customer numbers in the US. We play a vital role in delivering gas and electricity to many millions of people across Great Britain and the Northeast US in an efficient, reliable and safe manner.

The Foundation Engineer programme offers A-level, HNC and BTEC students a three-year achievement-based training scheme. There’s the chance to earn as you learn, with the opportunity to convert to a full degree. Plus there’s a secure job at the end of it. If you’ve completed a HNC, it’s the opportunity to specialise, to take internationally recognised courses and develop a career for life.

In the first year, you will undergo foundation industry training - including a detailed induction, and modules covering communication skills and safety management. The next two years are focused intently on the industry and on-site equipment. There are specific training modules for both substations and overhead lines, and you will experience both. Expect to make a number of on-site visits, one to the national control centre, where you’ll see how the electrical transmission system is operated.

Then, in the final year, you’ll complete your NEBOSH certificate – the recognised safety qualification. You’ll also gain authorised person status, enabling you to switch the transmission system for maintenance.

Join us at A-level and you'll go on to do a foundation degree. For those with an HND, HNC or degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering, you will be required to study individual modules to fill any knowledge gaps. Complete the foundation degree, and post scheme you may have the opportunity to convert to a full degree.

You’ll do most of your formal training at our own award winning, state-of-the-art Technical Training Centre, at Eakring in Nottinghamshire.  Support is also excellent.  You’ll have three reviews a year with your programme manager. At each meeting, your progress against module assessments, mentor evaluations and university reports will be reviewed. The aim at each stage will be to ensure that you are on track and, if necessary, identify additional support.
