National Grid is starting work on the £400 million Yorkshire Green Energy Enablement project. The project will upgrade existing infrastructure in North Yorkshire and build a new 10km electricity overhead line along with a short section of underground cables, sealing end compounds, and two new substations.

Ofgem has today confirmed its final approval on the costs associated with delivery of Eastern Green Link 2 (EGL2), enabling construction to start on the 525kV 2GW subsea connection between Peterhead in the north-east of Scotland and Drax on the east coast of England.

In March 2024, the previous Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, Claire Coutinho, granted a development consent order (DCO) for the Yorkshire GREEN Energy Enablement project, meaning National Grid has approval to begin construction to upgrade and reinforce the high-voltage power network between York, North Yorkshire and areas east of Leeds, West Yorkshire.
