Which Role?

We’re currently looking for people to join us in two separate roles. The information below explains the main differences between the two, and the skills that you’ll need to do them. You can find out more by hearing from people who work in the different roles in the Meet the Team section of the site.

Control

As a Control Engineer, you’ll be putting your knowledge of power systems to use to ensure the most secure and economic operation of our transmission system possible. It’s a crucial job – and because you’ll be delivering energy 24/7, 365 days a year – it involves shift work. Although you’ll receive full training, you’ll need an analytical mind and strong track record. What’s more, because you’ll liaise with both internal departments and external stakeholders such as Distribution Network Operators and Generators, you’ll have a great deal of influence. In fact, it will be felt across the whole country.

Planning

As a Planning Engineer you’ll be part of the team that plans to deliver the country’s energy supply. That means looking ahead to future developments across the UK, as well as keeping in touch with what’s currently happening. You’ll use your background within Engineering, numeracy or analytics to drive the outage plan and ensure that it can adapt to any changes we encounter. We want you to think differently and look for innovative ways to minimise costs whilst maximising the high levels and standards that we pride ourselves on. So you won’t be confined by the status quo. Because you’ll be liaising with people across the business and negotiating with external companies, you’ll need the credibility and sway to deal with people at all levels. Make no mistake, it’s a challenge, but one that you’ll be well-rewarded for.

Because we pride ourselves on our high standards, we’ll develop you to become the best engineer that you can be. We’ll support you through academic and professional qualifications. You’ll be stretching and shaping your skills in one of the most state-of-the-art control centres in the country. And in an organisation of this size and scope, prove yourself and there will always be potential to move on and up.
