Where is the exact location of the site and what’s nearby?
The site you’ll be working at is on the Reading side of Wokingham, on the edge of a village in Berkshire. It is quite rural, and a short drive to Wokingham. Nearby you can enjoy a woodland area for walking, and we’re also close to a health spa complex.
What facilities are there on-site?
The building you’ll be working in was commissioned in the 1980s. It’s very comfortable with views of the surrounding woodland and our landscaped gardens. There’s on-site parking, a gym, and restaurant and deli-bar. And we’re shortly opening a technical training facility.
Do you offer any kind of relocation package?
This depends on your circumstances. But, a package is available to cover items such as professional expenses, travel and relocation grants.
Are there flexible working hours?
Control is a 24/7 operation with specific shift times throughout the week. Planning is mainly a Monday-Friday role, although depending on where you’re based, a rota system involving some Sunday work is in place. We’re committed to family friendly working, and allow for initiatives such as childcare breaks.
What kind of training and development programmes are there?
We realise that even the most experienced of people joining us need to get up-to-speed on our bespoke processes, and we’ll provide all the training you need. But, we’ll also support the development of other skills, whether that means presentation training, a course on using spreadsheets or building softer personal and business skills. And, thanks to our association with learning institutions, we can offer further formal opportunities. We even sponsor Masters degrees.
What other benefits are there?
We offer a wide variety of benefits to all our employees, including:
- 25 days’ holiday (excluding bank holidays)
- Family provisions – we offer a range of benefits to help you balance your work and family commitments
- Pension – you’ll be eligible to join the Defined Contribution Section of the National Grid UK Pension Scheme. We’ll match your contributions on a 2 to 1 basis, up to 5%.
- Share schemes – we offer you the chance to become shareholders in the company through our Sharesave and Share Incentive Plan (SIP).
- In addition, our flexible benefits programme offers you more choice around health, lifestyle and protection. So whether that’s private medical insurance for you and your family, the chance to ‘buy’ or ‘sell’ up to 3 days of holiday or childcare vouchers, we do everything we can to ensure you can choose the level of cover that matches your needs.
What can I expect in terms of career progression?
The opportunities could take you far and wide. Many of our people stay at the location and progress through a number of different roles, being promoted to senior technical or management positions. But opportunities are also available at our headquarters in the Midlands, and field-based throughout the country. And, although there’s plenty to do in the electricity side of our company, there’s also the chance to explore working in gas or LNG, not to mention potential to work abroad in our presence in the north-eastern United States.
