Power System Design & Planning - Warwick

The Power System Design Team

The electricity we all depend upon flows from power stations to consumers through a sophisticated network of complex high voltage equipment, which we call the electricity ‘transmission system’.  That system has been around for many years, but it needs continual renewal if it is to remain reliable and to meet the nation’s changing energy needs. This task requires a pool of highly skilled engineers to make this happen, and that is where you come in!

These engineers are involved in investigating the systems, designing and recommending solutions to faults, planning the work and making sure the system is safe for our field engineers to work on.

Our power system design & planning teams are based at Warwick and provide the vital engineering expertise to decide our investment programme, plan work and support colleagues in control centres and out on site..
We want you to join us to become a talented engineer and help provide these services in what is arguably the most important company in the UK.  In doing so you could be doing once of these key roles:

• Examining the best ways to fix or replace our old equipment that is getting close to the end of its life.
• Investigating the different faults on our equipment, finding out what went wrong with it and recommending how to prevent it from maybe happening again to ensure it is as safe as possible
• Planning which work can be done, by finding the right people with the right skills in the right place and the right time.
• Adapting plans to fit changes in circumstances – sometimes at very short notice, and ensuring this change is co-ordinated across other departments.
• Ensuring the system is safe for our field engineers to work on. This can involve agreeing consents to do work on the asset (e.g. permit to work) with field engineers and controlling the safety precautions that are taken between power stations, distribution companies and large users such as Network Rail.

Whatever team you’re in the role promises variety, no day at National Grid is ever the same.  Some of these roles will be based in an office environment, whilst others will involve some time out on site meeting with our Field Engineers.  There are also some opportunities in one of our control rooms at Warwick, which involve working shifts.
