Before work can commence on an electrical asset it first has to be removed from operational service and safety precautions applied. This is where the Safety Response Control Centre comes in. Based at Warwick this Control Room operates 7 days a week and ensures, through liaising with National Grid’s system operators and those of other parties connected to our system, that our workforce are safe from electrical hazards when working on our transmission assets. This is a safety critical role undertaken in a challenging and dynamic Control Room environment.
Once you finish the two-year Foundation Engineer Programme, you are likely to be involved in the following duties:
-
Giving advice, guidance and co-ordinating safety precautions both onto and off the system.
-
Record these safety precautions accurately in the appropriate logging systems.
-
Agreeing consents to do work on the asset (e.g. permit to work) with field engineers.
-
Controlling the safety precautions that are taken between power stations, distribution companies and large users such as Network Rail.
-
Support other departments to manage the recovery when there are faults on the systems and outages.
-
Manage non-urgent system alarms.
-
Key point of contact for lightning risks, weather data, lone workers, and during system incidents.
