Engineer yourself an exciting and challenging career at National Grid by applying for our Foundation Engineer Programme. This is an opportunity to train to be an engineer involved in the design, maintenance or operation of our Electricity and Gas Transmission systems, which, as well as being a vital part of the nation’s infrastructure, are hugely exciting engineering challenges. We run a core development programme linked with Aston University which equips you for a future in our business.
There are a variety of opportunities available: office-based design and work planning roles, control centre shift work and work out on site in construction or maintenance operations. However you prefer to operate we have something for you. You opt for your first role before you start so you always know where you are heading, but the general engineering education we provide will provide a sound platform for future development.
If your interest is mainly mechanical engineering or process control/instrumentation then our new Gas Transmission scheme may be for you. Focused on the Gas side of the business training on this scheme will include, a Foundation Degree in Mechanical Engineering and Control and Instrumentation.
The core of our Electricity development programme is a Foundation Degree in Electrical Power Engineering, which leads on to a career designing, operating or maintaining our high-voltage electricity transmission system.
Both schemes provide the perfect opportunity for applicants with the right qualifications to ‘learn while they earn’. Foundation degree qualifications are designed by both employers and universities to combine academic study with workplace learning to equip people with the relevant knowledge, understanding and skills to improve performance and productivity. They provide a great route for people wanting to gain a degree, but not incur the debt of university. So basically, National Grid will pay you while we train you, to gain the skills you need to have a long and successful career with us – it is a fantastic opportunity for someone looking for an exciting career.
As long as you have the necessary qualifications and a willingness to learn, we will guide you through the rest! From leading technical training, great development opportunities and career support to outward bound courses and an employee network dedicated to new starters, you will be given every opportunity to succeed on the programme.
You will need one of the following qualifications:
- 2 x A-Levels (one in Maths, Physics, Electronics or Statistics) grade A – D.
- BTEC Certificate / Diploma / ONC in Electrical or Electronic Engineering (Merit or above)
- HNC in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering
- Degree in Electrical, Mechanical or Electronic Engineering.
So, whether you have just finished college and you’re starting to embark on your career, or are already in work but are looking for a career change, this could be the programme for you.
Whatever your working preferences are - we have something to suit….
If you like to work outside in a ‘hands on’ maintenance role then you might better suited to the field-based gas and electricity substation programmes.
If you’d prefer to work inside in an operational control room or busy office environment then you’ll be best suited to one of:
• Wokingham Control Centre (electricity control room operations)
• Warwick Headquarters (electricity planning design & control room operations)
• Warwick Headquarters (gas design & control room operations).
But you may prefer to be liasing with a variety of people both outside at different sites and also inside the office, in which case Construction may be for you.
