We’re big on training, so you can be sure you’ll be part of a high quality, and carefully structured approach to your career development.
The Construction Engineer training programme has been specially designed to build both your technical and management skills, preparing you to lead people and projects. It mixes mentored on-the-job experience with classroom learning and, depending on your prior experience and qualifications, will take between two and four years to complete. Throughout it, your development will be co-ordinated by our training partner – Develop Training Ltd.
Some training is provided at specialist locations, including our three state-of-the-art training centres at Hitchin (Hertfordshire), Eakring (Nottinghamshire) and Oldham (Greater Manchester). You’ll also study at Matthew Boulton College in Birmingham, which has first-class facilities. Training includes:
Induction. Normally carried out at our residential centre in Eakring, Nottinghamshire, this six lasts six week and covers everything from understanding our business through to health and safety. There’s also an Outward Bound course in Cumbria to help with team-building and bonding.
Study for technical qualifications. We sponsor this via block release arrangements with Matthew Boulton College. You will achieved a range of industry-recognised qualifications including an HNC in Mechanical Engineering. You’ll also gain Engineering Technician status with the Institute of Gas Engineers. (Note. You’ll need an ONC Engineering qualification to proceed to HNC, but if you don’t have it, we’ll sponsor you to achieve it).
Leadership training. You’ll also be sponsored through NVQ level 4 qualifications in Engineering Management (following successful completion of NVQ level 3 in Engineering Leadership). You’ll also attend a number of internal National Grid courses to develop your leadership skills and business knowledge.
Technical Training. Your hands-on practical experience will be supported with technical courses including pipe laying techniques, deep excavations and planning and permitry procedures.
