Scope of site

What information can be found in the "Responsibly" section of the National Grid corporate website?

The "Responsibly" section of this website is National Grid's web-based corporate responsibility report. It provides a Company-wide perspective on our governance, policies, performance and achievements over a wide range of economic, environmental, employee and social issues.

What period does the information cover?

The site is updated annually so the majority of corporate responsibility information presented now relates to year ended 31 March 2009. Where possible, data in the performance section of the site covers the five years ended 31 March 2005 - 2009.

What performance data is included?

Our corporate responsibility performance is reported in line with our Corporate Responsibility Reporting Principles.

Data in the performance section is aggregated to Company or country level (e.g. UK and US) and covers all wholly-owned businesses.

Where practical, performance data for 2007/08 has been restated as if KeySpan had been owned for the entire year (acquisition occured mid year, in August 2007). However, in many cases incompatibility between the performance metrics used by the two companies prior to acquisition means that a direct comparison is not possible between our 2008/09 performance and that of prior years.

Where appropriate and meaningful, both absolute and normalised performance data is provided. Normalised data provides a more accurate indicator of year-on-year performance than an absolute measure because it takes into account changing employee numbers resulting from acquisitions and disposals.

Unless otherwise stated, historic data includes discontinued operations (e.g. the four UK distribution networks sold in 2005).

Key financial information is predominantly located in the Annual Report and Accounts.  Background information about National Grid is set out in other areas of the corporate website.
