Calculating our greenhouse gas emissions baseline

The following table shows how our composite baselines for the Company, our UK operations and our US operations are compiled. In each case, we only used data from years where the data has been both verified and published. Data from previous years which were not verified or published is not used, although using this data would increase the baseline, which in turn would result in a greater percentage reduction. The table references where the verified data can be found.

Data is shown as either Scope 1 or Scope 2 in line with the World Resources Institute Greenhouse Gas Protocol Initiative

Where our business changes, such as the sale of National Grid Wireless and Advantica in 2007, we adjust the baseline accordingly to ensure a fair comparison with our current emissions can be made.

KeySpan will be included in our baseline for our 2008/09 reporting.

  1. The Annual report and accounts sets out Company greenhouse gas emissions for the relevant year but does not include a breakdown by business or emission source. In these cases, the baseline is derived from the detailed data collection and consolidation used to calculate the Company emissions.
  2. The baseline figure for 1991 is 62% of the total emissions  for that year, reflecting the sale in 2005 of four of the eight gas distribution networks represented by the original data. This apportionment between the sold and retained networks is based on 1997 data, which was the first year that data was reported for the eight individual networks.
  3. The baseline figure is 62% of the data reported, reflecting the sale in 2005 of four of the eight gas distribution networks represented by the original data.
