Our Social Purpose

National Grid’s purpose is to connect people to the energy they use.

We all rely on having energy at our fingertips – from the warmth and light we rely on at home, and the power which keeps our factories and offices going, to the mobile communications and other technologies that are essential parts of our modern lifestyle.

The energy challenge and our social purpose

Introduction

" It's impossible to imagine the life we live today without energy at our fingertips. Our society is built on it. "

The job we do

We own and manage the grids which many different energy sources are connected to. In Britain, we run systems that deliver gas and electricity across England, Scotland and Wales. In the northeastern US, we provide power directly to millions of customers. We hold a vital position at the centre of the energy system. We ‘join everything up’.

That puts National Grid at the heart of one of the greatest challenges facing our society – creating new sustainable energy solutions for the future – and developing an energy system that can support our economic prosperity in the 21st century.

National Grid: at the centre of the industry

We play a vital role at the centre of the energy industry. Our networks transport energy from where it is produced to where it is used.

At one end of the system...
are the generators and producers of energy. They all connect into our networks – high-voltage power lines and high-pressure gas pipes built to carry large amounts of energy over long distances. Like motorways in the road systems, our networks stretch across the country.

At the other end of the system...
are the homes and offices, hospitals and schools which use the energy. We all depend on the reliable, safe and continuous supply of energy. In Britain, we connect to the energy companies which distribute the supply to customers, and in the US we also deliver directly to customers.

In the communities where we work, almost all the energy produced goes through the grids we own and manage. We allow energy to connect into the system and then send it out to millions of people.
