Our business

National Grid is an international electricity and gas company and one of the largest investor-owned energy companies in the world. We play a vital role in delivering gas and electricity to many millions of people across Great Britain and northeastern US in an safe, reliable and efficient manner.

Transmission

We own and operate the electricity transmission network in England and Wales and the gas transmission network in Great Britain. We are also responsible for the operation of the electricity transmission networks in Scotland. In the US, we own and operate an electricity transmission network of spanning upstate New York, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Hampshire and Vermont.

Gas Distribution

We own and operate gas distribution systems in the UK and the northeastern US.

  • Around 190,000 kilometres of gas pipe
  • Delivery of 317 and 205 TWh of gas to over 10.8 and 3.5 million consumers in the UK and US respectively
  • Around 15,350 pressure reduction sites, and over 8.4 million standard cubic metres of gas storage capacity in the UK.
  • 16 liquefied natural gas (LNG) sites in the US.


Electricity Distribution and Generation

We are one of the leading electricity distribution service providers in the northeastern US, as measured by energy delivered, and one of the largest utilities in the US, as measured by the number of electricity distribution customers

  • Over 116,700 kilometres of circuit
  • 3.4 million customers
  • 65 TWh of electricity delivered
  • 670 substations
  • 57 generation units at 13 locations across Long Island
  • Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) network serving 1.1 million customers over 24,100 kilometres of circuit and 177 substations, delivering 22 TWh of electricity


Non-regulated businesses

We own National Grid Metering, OnStream, National Grid Grain LNG and National Grid Property in the UK and several non-regulated businesses in the US including LNG storage, West Virginia gas fields and home energy service activities. 

  • Metering and meter reading services for around 20 million meters in the UK
  • Property portfolio of around 800 sites comprising buildings and land of around 1,600 hectares
  • Phase III Grain LNG completion anticipated in 2010
