2009/10 highlights

Safety and occupational health

  • Lost time injury frequency rate equated to 0.15 compared with 0.25 in 2008/09; a 40% decrease 
  • Employee lost time injuries fell to 86 compared with 140 in 2008/09
  • 85 contractor lost time injuries compared with 108 in 2008/09

Customer service and network reliability

  • Met all US gas distribution regulatory standards of service regarding service quality indices and performance measures; met all but one UK gas distribution regulatory standards of service
  • Met all US electricity distribution regulatory standards of service
  • Improved ranking in three of four J.D. Power customer satisfactory surveys in US

Environment

  • 55%* reduction in our scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions compared with our 1990 baseline
  • Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions were approximately 8.8* million tonnes carbon dioxide equivalent, compared with 11.3 million tonnes in 2008/09 
  • Significant environmental incidents directly associated with our operations fell to 10 compared with 12 in 2008/09 - there were no contractor-related incidents compared with 4 last year

Employees

  • Achieved an Employee Engagement Index* of 68% for our 2010 Employee Survey compared with 70% for the 2009 survey
  • 13.5% of our workforce are black or minority ethnic compared with 13.2% in 2008/09; 22.7% of our workforce are female compared with 22.6% last year
  • A Stonewall top 100 company for a second year and scored 100% for the third successive year in the US Human Rights Campaign’s Corporate Equality Index

Economic development

  • Over £3.3 billion invested in new assets during 2009/10; a total of £14 billion over the past 5 years
  • Forecasting up to £22 billion of investment over the next 5 years
  • Over the past five years, ordinary dividends per share have grown by 62%

Society

  • Invested some £11 million in support of community initiatives and relationships across our operations
  • 82% increase in volunteer hours in company time for Special Olympics Great Britain compared with 2008/09
  • Launched School Power in the UK – a new programme of activities to enrich the teaching of energy, forces and materials. Launched Engineering Pipeline in the US – a six year development programme that creates a recruitment pathway to inspire promising students to pursue an education and career in engineering
