2008/09 highlights

The following are performance highlights for our 2008/09 reporting year.

Safety and occupational health

  • Lost time injury frequency rate equated to 0.25 compared with 0.30* in 2007/08
  • Employee lost time injuries fell to 140 compared with 157* in 2007/08, a nearly 11% decrease
  • Received the Safety and Health Practitioner/Institution of Occupational Safety and Health award for the best campaign of 2008

Environment

  • 42% reduction in our scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions compared with our 1990 baseline
  • Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions were approximately 11.3 million tonnes carbon dioxide equivalent, compared with 12.1* million tonnes in 2007/08 - a 7% decrease between years. 
  • Significant environmental incidents directly associated with our operations fell to 12 compared with 34** in 2006/07 - 4 resulted from contractor-related incidents compared with 25** the previous year

Employees

  • Achieved an Employee Engagement Index of 70% for our 2009 Employee Opinion Survey compared with 60% for the 2008 survey
  • 13.2% of our workforce are black or minority ethnic compared with 12.3% in 2007/08; 22.6% are female compared with 22.5% in 2007/08
  • Achieved The Times Top 50 UK ‘where women want to work’ status for the third successive year; A Stonewall top 100 company for the first time  

Society

  • Won the 2008 Gas Industry Energy Efficiency Award for our affordable warmth programme in the UK and a ‘Big Tick’ in the prestigious Business in the Community Award for Excellence for our Warm Wales initiative
  • Nearly 500 employees registered their interest in supporting Special Olympics Great Britain. Three hundred of those employees have already participated in at least one volunteering activity, totalling nearly 4,500 volunteer hours
  • Over the last 20 years, our energy efficiency programmes in the US have helped customers reduce their electricity consumption by more than 32 billion kilowatt hours and gas consumption by more than 70 million therms
