National Grid Appoints New Non-Executive Director

The Board of National Grid Group plc is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr Bonnie G Hill as a Non-Executive Director.

This will become effective upon the company’s acquisition of Niagara Mohawk Holdings Inc. She is currently a Non-Executive Director of Niagara Mohawk’s Board.
Bonnie Hill is President and Chief Executive Officer of The Times Mirror Foundation, responsible for philanthropic programmes and policy. She is also Senior Vice-President at the Los Angeles Times newspaper where she oversees communications, community relations and public affairs activities.

“Bonnie Hill will be a great asset to the National Grid Board, bringing specific understanding of Niagara Mohawk and broad experience with US business and consumer issues. Her extensive involvement in civic, educational and community affairs will strengthen significantly our Board’s expertise in these areas.”

Prior to joining Times Mirror in 1997 she was Dean of the McIntire School of Commerce at the University of Virginia. She also served as Secretary of the State and Consumer Services Agency for the State of California, and held a variety of presidential appointments including Assistant Secretary in the Department of Education and special adviser to President George Bush for Consumer Affairs. Previous appointments include Vice-President with Kaiser Aluminum and Chemical Corp., Executive Director of the Marcus A. Foster Educational Institute, and Assistant Dean of Student Services and lecturer at Mills College in Oakland, California.

In addition to her Non-Executive Director role with Niagara Mohawk, she is on the Boards of AK Steel Corp., Hershey Foods Corp., The Home Depot, Pomona College, Orange County Performing Arts Center, Hollywood Entertainment Museum, and the Los Angeles Urban League. She is also a member of the National Advisory Panel of the Institute for Research on Women and Gender at Stanford University in Stanford, California.

Her work has been recognised with honours and awards from many national and regional organisations. She has authored articles and delivered numerous presentations related to business, educational, environmental and social issues. She lives in Venice, California with her husband, and they have three daughters.

National Grid and Niagara Mohawk announced on 5 September 2000 that, subject to the required approvals, National Grid would acquire all the outstanding shares of Niagara Mohawk valued at approximately $3.0 billion. Completion is targeted for late 2001. Niagara Mohawk serves 1.5 million electricity and 540,000 gas customers in New York State.
