The nomination process

Nominations are invited under the Award categories listed below. You are encouraged to nominate your own work as well as the work of others. Team and group nominations are particularly welcome.

To make a nomination, complete and submit the nomination form, accompanied by a supporting statement of no more than two pages.

Category: Safety
Open to employees,  contractors and suppliers

Initiatives or best practices, particularly those shared and adopted by the wider business, and positive behaviours that have either been physically implemented or demonstrated by individuals or teams leading towards:

  • the improvement in an individual or team’s operational safety performance and/or
  • enhancement of the company’s reputation with regard to its overall safety performance.

Category: Health
Open to employees, contractors and suppliers

Positive and proactive actions or approaches towards ensuring the:

  • continued well-being and improvement in the health of an individual or team and/or
  • identification and management of work-related/work-based health risks or issues.

Category: Environment
Open to employees, contractors and suppliers

Initiatives, best practices and positive behaviours that have either been physically implemented or demonstrated by
individuals or teams leading towards:

  • prevention and improvement of environmental impact while undertaking our day-to-day activities
  • raising awareness of environmental practices required to avoid environmental incidents at National Grid sites.

Timeline and judging process


Submissions must be received by close of play on Monday 30 June. Shortlisting will take place during July and, if required by the judges, further details relating to the nomination may be requested.

Nominations will be judged on:

  • business impact
  • reputation
  • innovation
  • transferability
  • sustainability.

Within each category there will be one overall global winner and, in addition, global awards of merit will be available.
Winners will receive a cheque for £500 ($1,000) to donate to a charity of their choice.

Awards will be presented by Sir John Parker, Chairman, and Steve Holliday, Chief Executive, at ceremonies taking place in the UK and the US in early November 2008.
