Telling Tales in the Woods

13/04/2007

There will be tales from the woods later this month when storytellers from around the world gather at Bishops Wood Centre, near Stourport for an evening of storytelling on Saturday, April 21.

The environmental education centre lies in the grounds of the National Grid substation at Crossway Green and, in keeping with the surroundings, all the stories will have an environmental theme and will include tales both ancient and modern.

The evening’s performers include some of the leading exponents of the art of storytelling including:

  • Eric Maddern, an Australian born singer and storyteller who will perform extracts from his show ‘Burdens and Blessings:  songs and stories to sustain the world.’
  • Malcolm Green, an environmental storyteller, and choreographer Paula Turner will combine dance and storytelling to tell tales from Cameroon.
  • Gordon MacLellan, one of the most renowned environmental authors in the country, who will tell new stories from ancient landscapes.
  • Chris Salisbury, alias Spindle Wayfarer, who will blend storytelling and bushcraft.
  • Katrice Horsley, a favourite at Bishops Wood and storyteller for 15 years who has used her art while working with organisations including UNICEF and the British Council.

John Rhymer, head of the centre aid:  ‘This promises to be a magical evening of fascinating and beautiful stories both old and new.  Our storytellers have a wealth of experience in their art.’

The storytelling starts at 8pm and ends at 10.30.  Entry is by ticket only and costs £5 for adults and £3 for children over nine.

Tickets can be ordered by telephone on 01299 250513.

Bishop's Wood is part of National Grid's network of environmental education centres based on electricity substation sites around the UK.  Our centres are run in partnership with local education authorities, environmental charities and other organisations, and provide outdoor learning opportunities for schools and a range of activities and training for adults, community groups and companies.

National Grid environmental education centre sites range in size from a few acres in an urban setting to 80 acres of meadows and ancient woodland.  All provide a safe and secure environment for all age groups to learn about their natural world.
