Motorists in Ely are being advised that the junction between Downham Road and St Mary’s Street will be closed for two weeks, starting Monday 15 October, while engineers complete the final stages of essential gas mains replacement work.
Gas pipeline company National Grid will be replacing gas mains at the junction, as part of a project to replace some 200 metres of cast iron mains with brand new plastic pipes, which have a lifespan of at least 80 years if left undisturbed in the ground.
Downham Road and St Mary’s Street will remain open to traffic as normal, although motorists will not be able to turn into St Mary’s Street from Downham Road. Access into Downham Road from St Mary’s Street will also be closed and drivers are advised to follow the signed diversionary route.
Work currently underway in St Mary’s Street is expected to be completed by Friday, when the current traffic restrictions and temporary traffic signals in St Mary’s Street will be removed.
The work is being undertaken by Morrison Utility Services on behalf of National Grid and will enable local residents and businesses to continue to enjoy a safe and reliable gas supply for decades to come.
National Grid Construction Engineer David Jewson said: “We apologise for any inconvenience caused to motorists and residents. The traffic management measures are necessary to protect engineers and road-users while we do this essential work, but we are working hard to minimise disruption and to complete the project as soon as we can.”
The work is part of a national programme, developed by National Grid and the Health & Safety Executive, to replace all metal gas mains that lie within 30 metres of property.
